525,600

Life is not always exceptionally interesting and exciting, but that does not mean we shouldn’t celebrate and enjoy each moment of it.

If you are familiar with the broadway production Rent, then you’ll recognize the number 525,600 to be the number of minutes in one year.  The song continues to ask the question “how do you measure a year in the life?”

“525,600 minutes, 525,000 moments so dear. 525,600 minutes –

how do you measure,
measure a year?

In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee.

In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife. In 525,600 minutes –

how do you  measure a year in the life?
How about love? “

Today, this song is reminding me that we have so many moments, and yet, we often feel we have no time, or we’ve wasted so many.

Imagine this many minutes across a lifetime, across a year with your partner, across your time with family.  How many of these ordinary moments are taken for granted?

As Alborn says above, each moment has the potential to be a lesson.  Each moment is a new opportunity to bring so much more to your life, so how do we stop from the feeling of time famine and enjoy every moment of our lives?

As with yesterday’s post Are you really living? we have to bring more awake-ness into as many moments as possible. It is only through this that we can continue to embrace each moment we have available.

Think about how many Wednesday night meals you have and will enjoy with your spouse, how many times you will sip your morning cup of coffee, or drive yourself to work.  How many hours of television you watch in a lifetime or how many times you will take a shower.

I’m not a statistician, so I can’t tell you how many hours or days of your life these ordinary moments will add up to, but think about it, if you put yourself into autopilot and don’t pay attention to all these little things in life, how much time are you losing?

I know, there is nothing exciting about the little tasks like brushing your teeth, so why try to be awake in these moments, what can you accomplish?

If you are a spiritual person, you can use this time to send a prayer to someone in your life.

You can use this time to remind yourself how grateful you are for your life.

You can even take these moments to be blessedly silent and learn to observe your thoughts and feelings, or to meditate.

If you need practice, you can even run through your daily to do list, but I recommend learning to be more present rather than forward or backward thinking as you become more comfortable with your presence.

Realize that by taking back these autopilot moments you are reclaiming your life. You are reclaiming and even reinvigorating the power you have within yourself.

I would even venture to say you are adding hours to your life, in the sense that you are actively participating rather than mindlessly going through the motions.

Try to start with one little task a day, I started with brushing my teeth. Practice becoming present and staying in the moment the entire two minutes. Then try to expand to other tasks.

If you are a journaler, take some time to reflect on how your mindset shifts over time as you become more and more present. Reflect on the important things you learn in the ordinary minutes.
