The “Dangers” of gaining Self Awareness

This is one of those just-bare-with-me kinds of articles. I know the title is counterintuitive, and that is the point.

These “dangers” could also be called side effects or results, but where would the fun be in that?

What I’m really trying to say here is that the more you gain self-awareness and the more you begin to understand yourself, your world is going to shift, in the best most beautiful ways possible.

But first, what is Self-Awareness really?  I’m going to leave this to someone with much more eloquent words than I.

“Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”
C.G. Jung

Self-awareness is a look inside. It is a questioning of Who am I deep down. What am I doing with my life?  Where do I want to go?

It is a process of questioning and challenging what is in order to define and consciously decide what will my life be if I’m in control?  It is turning off autopilot and controlling the direction you wish to take with your life.

Self-awareness can happen to anyone at anytime.  As CG Jung says, those who look inside, awake.  Anytime someone chooses to look inside, no matter how scary, is beginning to take steps toward self-awareness. The more you continue to ask questions and challenge, the more aware you will become

This is all sounding pretty good right? So you may be still wondering “How can there be any dangers?”  Be patient, I will explain my friend.

#1- You may become more empowered

I say “may” however this is probably the first step of becoming self-aware.  The more you assess who you are, what you want, what your strengths are, the more you will grow confidently into that person.

This is only a “danger” to other people who have grown used to a quieter, less outspoken version of you.

The more you assess who you are, what you want, what your strengths are, the more you will grow confidently into that person.

You will probably begin to speak up more, take a stand for your needs and stop running scenarios in your head rather than speaking out loud.

This first step will probably lead to at least one of the next two “dangers.”

#2- You may begin to reevaluate aspects of life

As you question and challenge and gain empowerment over your life, you may notice you are reevaluating aspects of your life you never looked at too closely before.

This may include, but is not limited to; your job/career, your hobbies, the people you spend time with (both romantically and platonically), your location, the way you act, the foods you eat, the places you frequent, etc., etc.

This process of reevaluation may lead you to make changes in your life, some more drastic than others.

You will look at these pieces of your life and measure them up to the person you are becoming.  Do they still feel as if they are aligning with you? Do they still support the highest version of yourself you are growing into?

If not, you may begin to phase out or step away from some areas of your life that no longer serve you.

This may lead to some less than pleasant feelings that come up. Continue evaluating, continue questioning.  The process is ever growing and expanding with you. You only need make changes as they feel right for YOU.  The beauty of becoming empowered and self-aware, is YOU make those decisions and no one else.  YOU have all the control!

#3- Your changes may confuse people

As you reevaluate your life, people (especially those closest to you) may become quite confused and not know how to interact with you or how to react.

They may question your choices, both the drastic and the minor ones.  Stay strong!  You know what is best for you, embrace and enjoy it!  The validation you may have once sought from the outside world is now up to you to provide for yourself.  Be confident knowing you can be your best and strongest support system!

Be confident knowing you can be your best and strongest support system!

Just know that those who love you will embrace the confident, radiant, self-aware YOU. There may be an adjustment period and it may be a bit painful at times.  Just know that whatever you do to serve your highest self is exactly the right decision.

Release the fear that you will no longer be loved or accepted.  Love and accept yourself, all else will fall in line.

#4- Life may become much more vivid

The best way I can describe this (from my personal experience) is like living in Black and White only to discover Color.

Imagine how your world might change?

As a result of all the above scenarios, you may begin to see the world in a whole new way. Things that once seemed obvious, will now require some more thought.

You will question and challenge so many areas of your life and your world, and perhaps even the world as a whole.  Who knows what opportunities will open up for you?

#5 Your life WILL change

Finally, all I can say is that your life WILL definitely change as you become more and more aware of yourself.  The more you connect inward with mind, body, and soul, the more you will grow and trust.

Your intuition, which might have been silent for so long you wondered if it actually existed, may begin to speak up.

You may begin to see your emotions and evaluate before reacting as you might have in the past.

Positivity and Optimism may begin to appear regardless of your potentially pessimistic past.

The possibilities of how your life can change are infinite.

I would love to share in your journey. Tell me how your life has changed or how I can help you make positive changes.

Best Wishes!
